Origins - Festival of First Nations
Workshop
Theatre and Healing (Canada House) presented by Ondinnok, Quebec
(www.ondinnok.org)
Led by Huron-Wendat theatre-maker Yves Sioui Durand and Catherine Joncas, the workshop permits direct
engagement between the artists present and the London public.
It explores the way in which First
Nations work can inform artists and communities in the UK and elsewhere.
Inspired by shamanistic practice, Ondinnok's Theatre of Healing was evolved during a
three-year residency with a dysfunctional First Nations community, where they were able to deal
with alcoholism, violence, suicide and depression through the medium of performance.
Ondinnok is a First Nations mythological theatre company that integrates initiatory traditions and contemporary theatre practice.
This participation workshop is intended for theatre practitioners, students, and people interested in the relationship
between theatre and First Nations culture.
The workshop will look into the inner life of participants, examining their conflicts, their ondinnok, the secret
desires of their souls. It will begin by drawing upon the importance and the commonality of ancestry; exploring the
function and the role of the performer in healing theatre, where the performers give themselves away to the task of presentation.
Date: 11th-15th May, 10am-5pm daily.
Venue 6: Canada House, Trafalgar Square, London W1.
Price: £150 (£80 concs).
