Origins - Festival of First Nations

The Waimate Conspiracy - (9 May – Birkbeck, University of London 4pm)

Click to enlarge photo for The Waimate Conspiracy Waimate, South Canterbury, New Zealand. A 140 year-old land dispute comes to a head, with local Maori determined to prove that farmer Alex McKendry’s ancestors illegally took the Weka Valley from their forebears.

When the first claim is dismissed, George Kepa sets about literally digging up some hard evidence – in the shape of a cannon ball... A comic "mockumentary" about the issues of Maori land rights and oral history.

"An irresistibly enjoyable piece of work" (NZ Herald).
