Origins - Festival of First Nations
Before Tomorrow - (Sun 3 July, 9.30pm, Rich Mix, Bethnal Green Road E1)
(Canada 2009. Dir: Marie-Hélène Cousineau and Madeline Ivalu. Inuktitut with English subtitles. 93 mins. "No cert.")
Set in 1840, before many Inuit have met any white people, although rumours circulate
about what they might be, this acclaimed family drama is played out against the stunningly
photographed landscape of Canada’s far north.
Quietly compelling and intensely moving, this
beautiful film, a story of survival, captures the cultural and spiritual
values of the Inuit as their world was about to be changed by contact with outsiders.
